Many times children who have been removed from their homes because of abuse or neglect suffer from emotional trauma. The following information was taken from the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP). Their website is
www.aacap.org. Here are a few of the many mental health disorders that can affect children:

Anxiety disorders include:
- Constant thoughts and fears about safety of self and caregiver
- Refusing to go to school
- Physical complaints, such as a stomach ache
- Worries about sleeping away from home
- Overly clingy
- Panic or tantrums when leaving parents or grandparents
- Trouble sleeping or nightmare
- Phobias, obsessions or excessive worrying and low self-esteem

Conduct Disorder

- Difficulty following rules and behaving in a socially unacceptable way
- They are often viewed by other children and adults as “bad” or “delinquent”
- Signs may include aggression to people and animals, destruction to property, deceitfulness, lying stealing or serious violation of rules
- ADHD
- Symptoms include having difficulty staying focused, difficulty controlling behavior, over activity.  This can be easily misdiagnosed, so should be diagnosed by a competent professional.

Shaken Baby Syndrome

This is a serious brain injury that occurs when a baby is violently shaken.  It is considered serious child abuse which usually happens when a parent or caregiver is frustrated and angry and shakes the baby in a dangerous way.  Those that survive may suffer blindness, mental retardation, paralysis, seizure disorder, speech and learning disabilities, and more.  Visit
