Dealing with Stress

Grandparents must deal with a multitude of changes, often times difficult family situations, and financial burdens. All of these circumstances can produce enormous stress, anxiety and even depression. Remember that taking care of yourself is the most important thing you can do for your grandchildren!

There is no simple answer to managing stress, and solutions vary for every person and situation.  Learning to cope, understanding what we can change and what we cannot and making the best of circumstances will prove to be a gift for you and your family.

Here are some general tips on helping to reduce stress and anxiety:

a Always put your physical and emotional health at the top of your priority list. Be intentional about looking for signs that your life is out of balance. Proper diet, exercise, relaxation and limited use of alcohol will help any difficult situation.

a Do not give up activities that are enjoyable to you!  While you may have to make adjustments in your time and priorities,  remember that you need to nurture yourself even more when you are pulled in many directions.

a Ask for Help!  No one can do it alone! Be willing to share your needs with family, friends, co workers and others who are willing to help. Be specific in your needs and let others be a part of easing your burden.

a Find a support group.  Engaging with others who understand your circumstances, are walking in your shoes, and can help share ideas, knowledge and resources will prove to be a lifeline to coping and dealing with ups and downs of your situation.

a Educate yourself by finding out services that are available in your community that include financial, legal, educational and free or low cost counseling. There are links on this website, but also inquire with your schools, churches and local community centers.  Often there is help right in your neighborhood that you would not have known about had you not asked.
